Causes of Keratoconus

Keratoconus, a condition that has been studied for decades, remains enigmatic in its origins. While the exact cause is uncertain, it is believed to stem from a congenital predisposition rather than a specific known trigger. A hallmark of keratoconus is the progressive loss of collagen within the cornea, potentially due to an imbalance between the production and degradation of corneal tissue by its cells.

  1. Corneal Topography: This is the primary diagnostic tool for detecting early keratoconus and monitoring its progression over time. A computerized system creates a detailed map of the curvature and shape of the cornea, highlighting any irregularities characteristic of keratoconus.
  2. Slit-Lamp Examination: During this examination, a microscope with a special light source (slit-lamp) is used to examine the cornea closely. This allows the eye care professional to detect subtle abnormalities in the outer and middle layers of the cornea, such as thinning or conical protrusion, which are indicative of keratoconus.
  3. Pachymetry: This test measures the thickness of the cornea, particularly focusing on the thinnest areas. In keratoconus, the cornea tends to thin out, and pachymetry helps quantify this thinning, providing valuable information for diagnosis and monitoring disease progression.
